Can I meet you on site?
Most of our first meetings are happening online. Drop us a line at ohayo at nion dot berlin to get in touch!
Are you the owner of the building?
The C&A building is privately owned neither by NION nor any party related to NION.
NION Haus Neukölln is a concept for the C&A building where NION will hold a long lease.
What is biophilia?
Biophilia is a hypothetical human tendency to interact or be closely associated with other forms of life in nature. This desire or tendency term was coined by the Harvard naturalist Dr. Edward O. Wilson to describe what he saw as humanity’s “innate tendency to focus on life and lifelike processes,” and to be drawn toward nature, to feel an affinity for it, a love, a craving. (Citation: Natalie Angier, Merriam-Webster)
And what is a biophilic building?
Biophilic design is an approach to architecture that seeks to connect building occupants more closely to nature. Biophilic designed buildings incorporate things like natural lighting and ventilation, natural landscape features and other elements for creating a more productive and healthy built environment for people. Crucial elements besides architecture are community and social equity.
We work together with Living Future Europe and would like to participate with NION Haus Neukölln in the Institute’s Living Building Challenge. To do so, we have to meet many guidelines in very different areas – a challenge that we are very happy to accept.
Are you a vegan project?
No. Within the scope of the biophilic design concept we focus on nature and animals alike and it’s important for us that products (also animal products) / offers are sustainable / fair / organic. Certainly there will be a large selection of vegan, vegetarian food and we promote to reduce the consumption of animal products, but we don’t exclude them.
How are you charitable?
We are in the middle of the founding process of a non-profit limited liability company. We do not act profit-oriented, but want to put our vision into practice!
We’ll handle the finances of NION gGmbH in a transparent way by publishing our annual report. We’ll donate any surpluses to other charitable projects in the neighborhood, which we all select together as a community.
What is NION?
NION is a Kiez design project. Since 2017, we have been working with our community to develop ideas on how we can improve life in the city and deepen our connection to each other and to nature. Together we organize small and large events and workshops, learn from each other, go on excursions and bring different cultures together – with a special focus on Japan.
Why Japan of all places?
The NION community has a strong affinity with Japan – some of us were born and grew up there or have lived in Japan. This is where our togetherness came from.
Berlin is a place where many cultures meet and we would like to enrich it with more Japan.
